Italy and Football
Following the excitement of The World Cup, Geo and Atlas decided to do some exploring in the home of one of the most successful football teams in the world, Italy. Did you know that football, also known as Calcio in Italian, is the most popular sport in Italy? Let us tell all about the three P’s of Italian football…
The People
Series A is the highest league in Italy, with 20 of the country’s best teams. The current victors of Italy’s championship league is Juventus FC, located at the bottom of the Alps in beautiful Turin. Geo and Atlas recommend visiting the city’s famous Egyptian museum showcasing mummies and sphinxes. Italy’s other popular teams include AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli and you might recognise some of their most popular footballers; Giuseppe Meazza, Paolo Maldini and Gianluigi Buffon.
The Places
Throughout Italy, just like many countries there are several outstanding football stadiums. The stadium with the largest capacity is the San Siro (Stadio Giuseppe Meazza) in Milan that has a capacity of 80,018. That’s almost the population of a small city! There are over 60 stadiums in Italy, so no matter where you go, make sure to take your football boots.
The Passion
Football in Italy is a long serving tradition, Italians view football as a dream, passion, love and way of life. Whether they’re amateur, semi-professional or professional players or spectators, being involved with the game and everything around their home team is part of Italian life.
There are many things to see and do when visiting Italy, from seeing the beautiful sites and tourist attractions to trying the local pizza and pasta. But one thing you should definitely add to your itinerary the next time you visit Italy is an Italian football match. Geo and Atlas will never forget seeing and feeling the passion of the Italian fans and get immersed in the whole 90 minutes.
